Profile of A Champion

SUSIE Q. CONKLIN RECEIVING HER AWARD AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
WITH PRESIDENT JOAN RECTOR

I grew up in Montreal, Quebec where I attended school. I started golf in my mid 20's and was a member of the Quebec Golf Team for many years. We played in the Canadian Women's Amateur Championship which was governed by the CLGA (Canadian Ladies Golf Association) now called the RCGA (Royal Canadian Golf Association).

In 1976, I tried to qualify for the LPGA tour, did not make it, but heard of a mini-tour in California. A group of us met in Dallas, Texas and caravanned across the country. I played on the "mini tour" for 4 years, stopped playing golf, cold turkey, and became a tournament official (1980-1983). I wanted to get my amateur status back and was re-instated 2 years later.

Twenty-three years later, a friend told me about the USGA Senior Women's tournament being played at Pasatiempo. I was definitely a "senior" by then. I thought, what the heck, so got my 1976 clubs out of storage, and my footjoy shoes (which did not fit me).  I had to get ALL new equipment, shoes, golf attire and even new rules. You used to drop the ball over your shoulder and I had to learn the "scoring index".

I am a painting contractor, and have been doing it for a quarter of a century. My company is called "The Painter Sisters" I wallpaper, paint and apply faux finishes. I enjoy being self-employed. For the most part, I set my own schedule which lets me arrange my golf games around work. Have you seen the bumper sticker, "Born to Golf, Forced to Work"? That's me! I enjoy giving a tired room new life.

My home club is West Valley Women's Golf Club. When I am not working, I try to play at least 2-3 times a week. If I cannot play, then I go to the driving range and hit some balls, but spend most of my time chipping and putting.

One of my favorite hobbies is walking. From 2000-2002, I did the Avon 3 Day Breast Cancer Walks, 60 miles in 3 days. Then I needed another challenge, heard aboot a marathon that was "walker friendly" so a few of us flew to Portland and walked in the marathon. I also like to bike ride.

Some of my memorable accomplishments
Played in the US Amateur 1973, US Amateur and Open 1974, US Amateur 1975, British Ladies Open Amateur Championship 1975 at Royal & Ancient Golf Club (St. Andrews) and we WERE the lst women allowed into the Club House. I also represented Canada in the Commonwealth Matches 1975 in Scotland.

2004
US Senior Amateur, Pasatiempo. Qualified for 1st Round Match Play.

2006
I had an eventful year. In May, I won the PWGA Senior Event and then a week later, I got hit by a car while walking in a cross walk. I could not work or do any exercise for 7 weeks. Trust me; I am very lucky to be vertical. I returned to golf in July and won the PWGA Championship Event in August.

2007
Won the PWGA Championship, played on the Nor-Cal Cup Team (lst time), and won the PWGA TOC (Tournament of Champions) inaugural event in San Jose.
