About Us > PWGA History

Our Founder and Honorary President, Helen Lengfeld organized the PACIFIC WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION in 1947 to promote the best interest of amateur golf for women living in Northern California. The PWGA association continues to serve women golfers at Public Golf Courses in Northern California today through our 200 plus member clubs and almost 10,000 individual members.
PWGA is governed by an elected Board of Directors and divided into eight geographical areas in Northern California: East Bay, Fresno, Monterey, North Central, Redwood, Sacramento, San Jose and Stockton. Each area has an elected Director and committee chairs. The Board of Directors comprises the Executive Officers and 12-15 Directors each to administer the various affairs of the Association. Directors and Committee Members serve without compensation, but in order to make an opportunity to participate accessible to all interested members, they are reimbursed for expenses incurred that are within the normal scope of their duties.
Yearly PWGA sponsors six major tournaments for our eighteen-hole membership. Additionally play days are conducted in each of our eight geographical areas. Individual members earn points at each play day with the hope of being selected for the coveted six Winner's Circle Medallions ... three Low Net and three Low Gross awards.
The Nine-Hole Director oversees 30 plus clubs that have selected a nine-hole handicap. Special play days are also held for the "Niner" members and they also award the Winners Circle Medallions.
PWGA is a not for profit 501(c)(7) membership association. We retain the services of an Executive Director to administer the business details of running the association office and assist the Board of Directors.
